Art Attack: Studio J Tricks to Add Flair to Your Layouts

Even though Studio J® is fast and easy to use, it is helpful to know some great tricks that can make customizing your layouts even more exciting. Here are some Studio J tricks straight from our professional Close To My Heart artists:

1. Customize your background and texture paper. You can change the color and intensity of the background and texture paper included in whichever kit you choose. Simply select the piece of background and texture paper, change the color in the color selection tool, and increase or decrease the intensity of the color in that same popup box.

2. Crop My Stickease® quotes, titles, and tags. The cropping feature on the My Stickease images allows you to select a section of a quote, title, or tag to use as a border or other embellishment.

3. Create a customized My Stickease image. If you have a specific image in mind to use as an embellishment on your page, you can create a customized My Stickease to fit your theme perfectly. Simply add a text box, photo hanger, ribbon, ribbon slides, and Stickease to create the little suitcase! So easy! Be sure to crop or send elements behind other elements when necessary, and add several elements together for a unique look!

4. Select more than one element at a time. If you want to move several elements of your layout at once, simply click and drag your mouse around the elements you would like to select. Let’s take buttons, for example. After the buttons have been selected, you can click the icons in the popup box to choose to align the buttons vertically or horizontally if you desire.

5. Make faux washi tape with vellum text boxes. To create the look of a piece of clear washi tape, make a small rectangular text box, filled with vellum background (this is the default color for text boxes). You can make the tape strips as large or small as you want, or even layer them for more emphasis.

6. Stretch one photo across multiple photo wells. If you have fewer photos than photo wells, instead of deleting the excess wells, try scaling the picture to a larger size and then copying the picture to other photo wells and matching the photos up until they align with an almost seamless image. This trick works best with photo wells that are adjacent to each other.

7. Create ruffled ribbon. Select “Ribbons” in the drop-down menu under the Embellishments toolset. Choose ribbon tab and rotate the tab so that it is vertical on the page. Then layer several tabs on top of one another, sending every other one to the back to create a ruffled look.

8. Create a jagged border with text boxes. You can create a jagged border simply by rotating multiple text boxes about 45 degrees and making them the same color as the background. Put these boxes on top of a long, rectangular box of another color, and you’ve got a jagged border!

9. Change the background of your layout. Sometimes you may like the photo and journal arrangement in a layout, and yet want to change the background colors. Because photos sit on top of everything else, this is easy to do. Simply pull a journaling box over the space you want for a different background and fill it with a color from the color selection tool or a patterned paper from the Papers toolset. Then, send it backwards until the photo wells are on top of your new background.

Bonus Trick! Use keyboard keys to make embellishments. Did you know that some of the best tools for creating custom embellishments are the basic keys on your keyboard? It’s as simple as typing into a journaling box with no background color. Use periods to make a polka dot pattern, angle brackets to create a trendy Chevron look, overlapping pound signs to make burlap, question marks to make rope, and so much more!

Studio J Saturday: Express Collection - Travels

Here's another super-quick layout using the Studio J Express Collections (Travels). The Express Collections come in several themes with multiple layouts within the theme. They're great for creating a quick album and even include one layout designed to be the first and last page of your book. This layout took me about 15 minutes to create with beautiful results!

Studio J Saturday: Express Collection Travels

The Studio J Express Collections made this project much easier. The beautifully designed layouts have all the embellishments already on the layouts - you just add photos, journaling, and a title. You can still make some changes such as paper color, but it is a very quick and easy way to get a beautiful result!

I had such a great time making these pages. Check out those awesome tube socks on my husband and his brothers! Weren't the 70's great!

Studio J Saturday: Snow Day

Aren't these snow pictures so cute? Growing up in Alabama, my husband and his siblings didn't see a lot of snow. When they got some snow, it was well documented. I love the three little snowmen - almost all the snow in the yard is scraped together to make those snow people.

The Stickease available with this paper kit are some of my favorites. The snowflakes are so beautiful. I overlapped two in the middle of the page to give the effect of carrying it across two pages.

Studio J Saturday - Avonlea

For a few years, I have been working on a project to scan all the photos from my husband's childhood. The photos were in magnetic albums (aaarrrrggghhhh!), so I rescued them. As I started scanning the photos to share with the rest of his siblings, I decided to make Studio J layouts and order four copies of each layout. It has been quite a process, but I'm happy to say I have finished! I'm going to be sharing the layouts on Saturdays for quite some time (there are LOTS of layouts!). I especially love this layout of my husband, his brothers, and their sister when they were little. (My husband is one of the twins.) They were stairsteps - four children born in three years! They were so cute, and the Avonlea papers complement the older photos so well.

Remember that Studio J layouts are only $5 each (for a 2-page layout) until March 15. You can try the software here for free! Design as many pages as you'd like - you only pay when you purchase the layout.

Studio J Saturday: Express Layout - All About Me

Studio J is continuously improving and offering more features. One of the newer features is the Express Collection. Express Collections are exactly what they sound like: a quick, pre-made layout. All you do is drop in the pictures, add journaling, and change the title if you wish. You may also add some embellishments and change the paper colors if desired, but the layouts are lovely just like they are. The only thing I changed on this Express Layout (from the All About Me collection) is to add a small text box and bow above the title "Friends." Super fast, easy, and gorgeous!

The lovely ladies in the photos went to Detroit with me last fall for a 2-day CTMH Regional event for consultants. We enjoyed two fun days of laughing, eating, and creating!

If you think you'd like to try Studio J, the Express Collections are a great way to go. Give it a try today and enjoy results like these!

Studio J Saturday: Express Collection One More Time

Here is another quick layout from the All About Me Express Collection. One fun thing I did was to make a subway-style journaling box. I created multiple text boxes, using different fonts and turning the boxes different ways. I thought it was a fun touch to reflect the fun we had on our CTMH getaway!

I also created a journaling text box, changed the background to "none," then layered the box over the main photo. I love the effect!

Studio J Saturday: Beautiful Bride

This is one of my favorite Studio J layouts. Even though pink was not one of the wedding colors, it works with the photos. "Lucy" is such a cheerful paper pack! Another thing I love about Studio J - you can use papers that are no longer available in the catalog.

Studio J Saturday: The Wedding

More wedding photos . . . there are only 5 or 6 hundred, so we may be here a while. I love these photos of our darling ring bearer (my nephew) and flower girl. They did such a great job!

Once again, I adjusted the colors in the paper pack to work with my photos. You can't do that with "real" paper!

Studio J Saturday: Avonlea

2012 was a big year at our house: our only daughter got married. I am having a great time documenting the big event. This Studio J layout was one I did as part of the 5-pack I received for attending the CTMH Regional event in St. Louis in October. The directions we were given used the Avonlea papers, which I love. However, the colors did not work for my layout. The great thing about Studio J is that you can change the colors of the paper to work for you! Instead of green and teal, I was able to make the papers work in the wedding colors - yellow and gray. I love the way it turned out!

Studio J Saturday - Victory Layout

My baby graduated from high school this year. It sounds so cliched, but where did the years go? When I had three little ones under the age of 5, it seemed like they would always be small. Then I turned around, and they are all grown up into wonderful adults. My grandma used to tell me, "The days are long, but the years are short" (about child rearing). She was right! I'm so proud to be the mom of this handsome, thoughtful young man!

Step-by-step with Studio J - Mischief Layout (really - it is!)

I'm sorry that I've been MIA lately. My youngest child graduated from high school a few weeks ago, and my oldest child (and only daughter!) is getting married Friday. It has been a bit crazy around here! In addition to the other activities, I'm also gearing up for the annual CTMH Convention in a few weeks in Dallas, TX. Close to My Heart generously gave each Convention attendee a Studio J 5-pack with detailed layout instructions. I completed mine and will be able to pick up the layouts at Convention!

I thought I'd share the layouts with you along with the instructions so you can create the layouts, too. It's so quick and easy. The best value is to purchase an annual membership ($99 - you get half-price layouts, free page protectors, and free jpgs), but if you'd like to try it out, a 5-pack is a great way to go. Can you believe the paper for this layout is Mischief? It's so fun to be able to change the colors of the kit papers to work with your photos! I did not vary much from the instructions except for the title. Have fun!

Kit: Mischief
Pattern: Dynamic Duo
Photos: 1 vertical, 1 horizontal, 4 square

FIRST STEPS
1. Select Mischief kit.
2. Select Dynamic Duo pattern.
3. Select kit mix 5.

8. Add 1/8" Cocoa photo mats to the two larger photos (click on photo, "Mat" dropdown).

9. On left page, change bottom left photo to text well by clicking on the photo then clicking on far-right "convert to text" button. ZTzhen set background paper to White Daisy.

10. Change Lagoon cardstock on both pages to a lighter shade by adding a journaling box over the Lagoon cardstock and surrounding area. Delete "Add journaling" by highlighting the text and clicking the space bar. Send to back (right-click).

11. Delete title box from left page.

2. Add embellishments to left page as follows:
  • Add a Tulip Bigger Brad to top of each cupcake (Embellishments>Metals, 100%).
  • Add Tulip staples to top of cherries (Embellishments>Metals, 100%).
3. Add embellishments to right page as follows:

4. Add Colonial White Medium Square stitching (Embellishments>Stitching, 126%) to small photo mats.

5. Add Journaling to the left page by layering 3 journaling boxes. For the first one, drag a journaling box on top of the White Daisy cardstock, sizing to fit the top half of the cardstock piece. Type "Sugar" and then a couple of spaces then type "Spice" using Ever After Font at 50. Change the color to Cocoa with no background color. Add another journaling box and only type "&" in Ever After Font at 85. Change the color to Baby Pink with no background color. Place box in between "Sugar" and "Spice" and right click to send to back. Add third journaling box to the lower half of the White Daisy cardstock for the rest of the journaling. Change color to Cocoa with no background color. Change the font to Delightful.

6. Add title to the right page using two journaling boxes. In the first box type "time for something" which uses Delightful font and change the color to Cocoa with no background color. The second is for the word "Sweet" in Ever After Font. Change the color to Cocoa with no background color. Position both on the White Daisy cardstock strip at the top of the page.
